The 2026 ARTEFFECT summer competition—free to enter and open to all students in grades 9-12—invites young artists to celebrate the stories of innovators. Young artists explore these Unsung Heroes who were Innovators by creating original visual artworks, writing reflective Impact Statements (500-1,000 words), and showcasing their projects in their classrooms and communities to stimulate positive change.
The summer competition welcomes a range of artistic approaches. Young artists may explore the stories of their chosen Unsung Hero Innovator through abstraction, landscape, narrative art, portraiture, and more. Various 2D and 3D mediums are eligible including assemblage, digital art, drawings, mixed media, paintings, prints, sculpture, and textiles. There is no size limit. In the Impact Statement, students discuss their Unsung Hero’s contributions and lasting impact, their own creative process, and plans for sharing their ARTEFFECT project with others.
All finalists and winners are featured on the ARTEFFECT website. Selected award-winning projects are also showcased in exhibitions at the ARTEFFECT Gallery at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream in Washington, DC.
The 2026 ARTEFFECT summer competition offers multiple awards across various categories, totaling over $20,000 in financial prizes. Entries from students in grades 9-12 are eligible for all awards. No submission can win more than one award or prize. Winners receive cash prizes.
