Susan Denise Volluci
Visual Art Teacher & Art History Teacher, Central Falls High School | Central Falls, RI

"The idea of Unsung Heroes is particularly intriguing to me because of the incredibly diverse student body I work with in Central Falls. It is important to always be aware of the unsung heroes behind the scenes who give so much of themselves so that the rest of us can advance and grow."

Susan Vollucci’s philosophy of teaching continually progresses as she learns and gathers new experiences not only from her own constant need to learn but also from her students and peers. She does not believe there are limits to learning about education and the arts and will always pursue new avenues to explore. Vollucci’s appreciation and fascination with artists and heroes in history has been developing since she was a child. She encourages students to take artistic risks in a safe and nurturing environment. Being able to watch students grow as they make connections and find their own creative voice is a true gift. She feels it is important to have art lessons that relate to students on a personal level as well as to global cultures and connections. Teaching in the district where she works is an incredible honor, and Vollucci feels privileged each day to work with such a diverse student body. She has spent her entire professional teaching career working with inner-city students. Her experiences living and working in New York, New Mexico, and Rhode Island have given her an immense amount of respect and knowledge of heroes in history and normal walks of life.
